I work for a company that manufacturers home, office and school supplies
to mass markets and commercial accounts. My company offers all
employees $100 for line extensions of an existing product, $250 if it's
a unique product idea and 1% of all sales for the 1st 12 months if they
end up selling the product.

I work independently but when I consult in corporations I don't see, or
get much interest in, a system for generating ideas. Does anyone have
any first hand knowledge of companies doing a good job of rewarding or
encouraging creativity? 3m can't be the only one.
Many years ago I worked for McGraw Hill and there was a system for
submitting ideas and being paid for the savings or profit they incurred.
I received one very shortly after I arrived. After that I must have
become part of the same-old-way of doing business because I never
applied for or got another one.

they also offer 10% of an employee's time to do "anything" in their labs
without being accountable of what succeeds and what doesn't. that is
exactly how 3M got to invent the post-it notes.

In today's issue of Report 103, I suggested idea rate
compensation in innovative companies...
"I expect you are familiar with piece-rate manufacturing
work. The concept is that instead of paying manufacturing
employees a salary, you pay them for each piece of work
that they complete. The theory behind this concept is that
i f you pay people per piece, they will be more productive,
out of a desire to maximise their income.
A company that is truly keen on innovation might consider
paying their employees on an idea-rate basis in which
employees are paid per idea. For example...
Pay per relevant idea = US$50
Pay per implemented idea = US$1000"
(see complete article at
http://www.jpb.com/report103/archive.php?issue_no=20060307
What do you think? Could a firm offer employees payment by
idea in place of a salary? How might it work?
