Thank you all for your SENSATIONAL + valuable input, offers and advice. I
would be delighted to share with any of you what I know-be that experience,
contacts, networks or insights. I am not an academic, or a trainer or even
a facilitator, but I seem to have a gift for transformational leadership,
which mostly requires tenacity, resilience and a sense of humour!

Thanks for the challenge! I help my students do research and I've found
scholar.google.com helpful at times. I found the below in about 30 seconds
using the words: effects of physical environment on creativity (without
quote marks). Premier researcher Teresa Amabile has an article listed on
the same page involving a questionnaire to measure creative work
environments. Good luck!

The Potential Role of the Physical Environment in Fostering Creativity

ABSTRACT: Two studies investigated the role of specific interior design
elements on creativity. In Study 1, a photographic structured Q sort was
used to determine where participants would feel most creative and least
creative. Content analysis of the photographs by independent raters scaled
each setting according to size, shape, light, internal organization of
objects, and characteristics of bounding surfaces. Analyses identified 5
environmental characteristics that independently predicted greater
perceived creativity: (a) complexity of visual detail, (b) view of natural
environment, (c) use of natural materials, (d) with fewer cool colors used,
and (e) less use of manufactured or composite surface materials. In Study
2, tests of actual creative performance were administered in 2 different
settings. One setting had been rated relatively high in creativity
potential, and the other setting was rated relatively low in creativity
potential by the original participants in Study 1. Creative performance of
an independent sample was greater in the setting that had been rated higher
in creativity potential by participants in Study 1.

I am trying to find some really solid research on the relationship between
physical environment/ architecture/ interior design/ aesthetic stimuli and
creativivity, imagination and innovation.

Can anyone help- the usual Google search results offer fairly superficial
and vague results. (Maybe its my search string that's to blame!)

However, i do need to cross reference this research electronically
though....even if to an abstract.  It is to support a challenge to our
employees to generate ideas for how we can adapt a standard formal
corporate office environment to support playful and creative thinking - but
without anarchy or rebuilding!

Hi all

thanks Randah, and Andy for your feedback and ideas.

I agree the key is to ask them what they want. In fact I have arranged a
staff summitt in the next few weeks to do just that. My idea is to set the
scene with our manager talking about our future direction and how
innovation and improvment is a part of that journey. Then with the help of
a dynamic and inspirational speaker ask them what innovation means to them
and how to intiate action and encourage momentum. I will finish off with a
creative challenge and an innovation challenge for them.  creative
challenge - To design, create, build, write, develop something that
represents/depicts their (team/section/unit) understanding of our
organisation its future direction and the part innovation has to play it
in.

Innovation Challenge:  How might we encourage innovation in our
organisation?
Both will have deadlines and a team prizes.

Thank You

Hello Mica,

If you are implementing a culture of change in your organization, you need
to create buy-in within the employees. why would they want to change their
way to fit in your model anyway?? speak to people of all levels and tally
up your alleys. most importantly, ASK THEM how they define innovation or
creativity and what would they do to help build it, or how do they vision
it in the organization as a whole. with all their input, you will have lots
of stuff to start with in structuring your model, plus you have already
spread the word in the organization about this initiative (if new) or
change (if your department already existed). make sure to mention to all
that they can always change their minds and come up to you with new ideas
(you open trust this way and keep the flow coming).

good luck!
Randah

Hi imagination club members,

I have been a little slow in putting down my ideas for vamping up adding
value to the club. Paramount for me is to hear more stories from people
about what has worked and what has not. What people are currently working
on and how they are going about it - use it as a communities of practise.

OR we could choose a common issue that we are all grappling with and use
our current practise/job/situation to apply agreed techniques, ideas etc
and report on the results - ie

I would love to join you for your get together in Belgium, but
unfortunately I live in Brisbane Australia and a short trip to Belgium is
out of the question just at the moment.

To all those Aussies out there especially those in South East Queensland I
would be interested in starting up our own local club - any takers?

As to ideas for the club overall I would love to hear more form those of
you who provide - innovation advice and support to organisations - what
does that mean, who do you target, how do you put something together, what
tools do you use etc?

In my role I am responsible for supporting and encouraging innovation in my
division. My thoughts on this so far have been to draft a framework/model
for how it will work (very rational of me) just to give staff, mgt and the
board a sense that there is some structure around it and to get support
funding. The crux I believe is the culture of the organisation to accept,
look for and encourage ideas and creative thought. So I am intending
to work on developing, encouraging and supporting the creation of this type
of culture. How I am not sure yet. But I know it will involve some level of
social network stimulation and understanding. Has anyone heard of Dr Karen
Stephensons work on social networks?

If any of you have any thoughts about this please I would love to hear
them.

Thank You

Dear Mariana..

Thanks for your post and welcome to the Imagination Club!
The Imagination Club is whatever you - and the rest of us -
make it out to be. You can see some of the previous
discussions in our archives at
http://davie.textdrive.com/pipermail/imagine/

My original vision for the Imagination Club was to focus on
business related creativity and innovation. But there are
educators, students, managers of charities and all kinds of
other people here who would like to see issues pertinent to
their interests.

The Imagination Club is an unfunded, unstructured and
slightly anarchic place for playing with imagination,
creativity and more. Unfortunately, most of us are busy
with professional obligations, so  any thoughts about
directions for the Imagination Club must be reasonable in
terms of resources.

One of the components of the Imagination Club which we are
are working on here in Belgium is: local Imagination Clubs.
These would be small groups either started as Imagination
Clubs, or existing creativity groups that could associate
with the on-line imagination club. I will have more news
about local imagination clubs soon. I am working on a web
site at www.imaginationclub.org.

I am thinking about forming a board of advisers - people
who are keen on putting a little more time into the
Imagination Club in order to help make it a better place.

In the meantime, this latest challenge about adding value
to the Imagination Club has been an exercise in learning
more about your - and others' - thoughts on making the club
a better place.

One idea that has been repeated is the idea of turning the
Imagination Club into a corporate think tank. That's an
interesting thought and one to explore.

So, I've probably posed more questions than I have
answered. When I have time, I am reviewing your ideas, my
ideas and what is possible with no resources.

So, keep your ideas coming. More from me soon!
